American 1862 One Dollar Coin Brooch in 22ct Gold
I love this simple design that really shows off these beautiful coins! The coins are both American 1 Dollar coins, which were only produced from 1849 - 1889. They were once legal tender but they’re so pretty and delicate, I think they’re much better off as jewellery!
This style of coin is known as the Indian Head, portraying an idealised Native American princess on one side and a wreath with ‘1 dollar’ and the year 1862 written on the other side. This particular coin was only produced from 1856 - 1889, with both of these coins from 1862 - so they’re really lucky finds!
The coins are in great condition, especially for being 161 years old! There is some minor wear to the coins commensurate with age, and one coin has a deeper scratch on it. One coin is slightly bent at one spot near the pin hinge. The pin wiggles and is floppy when open, but it’s secure in the catch (it just needs a bit of a firm push and pull to close and open) and sits so well on. On the back there is a little bit of cosmetic damage where the brooch fittings have been attached.
The two coins are 22ct gold (unmarked but tested to confirm), but the pin is metal. The catch for the pin is 9ct gold (unmarked but tested).
Measures approx 15mm across and 30mm long. Weighs approx 3.8g.
