Georgian Agate and Seed Pearl Pendant
This stunning pendant is around 200 years old - so it’s not just a pendant, but also a little piece of history! This piece would have started life in the late Georgian period (so the early 1800’s) as a brooch, likely with woven hair in the middle. At some point its been nicely converted to a pendant, and the hair has been replaced with a beautiful piece of agate. The agate is a wonderful fit, and it looks so perfect surrounded by the seed pearls - it’s definitely one of the best replacements I’ve seen! The gold chased border is beautifully detailed, and the seed pearls are well matched and look to be original.
The pendant is gold cased - this is not the same as gold plated! Gold cased jewellery was developed in the late 1700’s, and was a popular way of making more affordable yet durable pieces. Gold casing is a thick layer of gold over a core of silver or base metal, and is much longer lasting than gold plating. This pendant is still in great shape, but you can see the base metal layer on the back of the pendant where the brooch fittings have been removed. This base layer has also been exposed around where the bale has been added, but I don’t think this is obvious when worn.
There is also a small split in the gold on the back of the pendant, as well as some scratching, and there is a scrape on the front and back where someone has tested the gold content in the past. Even with these flaws, the pendant is a high quality piece and in remarkable shape considering its age! Ready to wear!
15ct gold cased (unmarked but tested), with a 9ct gold bale
Measures approx 25mm long (excluding bale) and 15mm across. Weighs approx 5.4g
