Antique Citrine Intaglio Fob Pendant
This pendant truly is one of a kind! The large citrine intaglio is beautifully carved with so many wonderful details. Our handsome gentleman is wearing a laurel wreath, so he’s modelled on an Ancient Roman gent.
The citrine has a colour gradient that I think is just so lovely - it’s orange on one side, and kind of diagonally fades to a very pale yellow or clear quartz. The carving looks great against this unusual ombre background!
I sometimes avoid buying fob pendants, because you can’t see the intaglio’s while they’re worn - but I make exceptions for those with beautiful gold settings like this one! The wonderful engraved details all over mean this is a joy to wear, and looks great from all angles.
Some of the engraving on the gold setting is worn, and the bale looks like a later replacement. There’s some tiny nibbles and light surface scratching on the citrine intaglio, but overall it’s in great shape. The letters ve (or re) and od are etched into the surface of the citrine on either side of our gentleman’s neck (along with another small etching in the top corner that I can’t make out) - these might be the initials of the craftsman that carved the intaglio, or of a previous owner. Intaglio (including setting) measures approx 22mm long and 17.5mm across. Fob is 17mm tall including the bale. Weighs approx 8.3g.
