Antique Enamel and Mother of Pearl Stud Earrings

These enamel and mother of pearl studs started life over 100 years ago as shirt studs, but I’ve transformed them into these easy to wear stud earrings! The studs measure more than 14mm across so they have great presence on the ear, but as they’re hollow, they’re light weight and so comfortable to wear. The white and bright green enamel is really vibrant, and looks lovely next to the mother of pearl centres.

The studs are in great shape, especially considering they’re over 100 years old! They have full English hallmarks and I think the date letter is for 1908, although this part of the hallmark is a bit worn. The enamel is in great shape, and there’s just some minor surface wear, including some small scratches and scuffing to the gold backs of the studs. You can see on the back, right next to the stud post, where I’ve removed one end of the loop that was part of the original dress studs and this small section is not totally flush with the rest of the back.

The studs were made by W E Patterson & Co, based in Warstone Lane, in Birminghams Jewellery Quarter, who were active in the early 1900s.

9ct gold with full English hallmarks for 9ct gold on the back of the studs, and partial 9ct hallmarks on the edge of the studs, and on one of the posts (although this mark on the post is very worn). The butterfly backs are new and marked 375 for 9ct gold.

Measure approx 14.2mm across. Weigh approx 3.1g all together.
